Holidays are beautiful. We spend time with family, enjoy cooler fall weather, eat delicious meals, and more. Nevertheless for many children it can be challenging to get into the groove of school. I myself am not sure what day it is half the time! We are also beginning to wake up to darkness. Let’s face it the morning sunshine of summer is gone. What can we do to help our children get some excitement for learning and going back to school after a few days off from school.
Here are some strategies that I use with students that you can try with your children:
I often look over previous years’ results and learning goals with my students. You can do this with your children too. Look at their report card with them from last year. Discuss their teachers’ comments, areas that they improved in and the skills they need to work on. Focusing on what they accomplished already acts as a motivator.
Ask your child what their goals are for this school year. What do they want to work on? Do they want to improve their reading skills? Understanding math concepts better? Listening more carefully to instructions? Sharing more easily with their classmates? Children know themselves best and you will be amazed at what they want as their personal goals.
Share your goals with them too. It’s important for our children to be aware that as moms, dads, and professionals we set goals too. Modeling is key. I like to share some of my own goals with my students and my own children.
What do you do to help your children get back into the routine of school? What helps your children? Please share your ideas and tips! If you have any questions about this or other topics related to your children’s learning please contact me. Have a great rest of your week!
